چکیده

The island of Cephalonia, Western Greece, was struck by two strong seismic events, with magnitudes, ML= 5.8 and ML = 5.7 which occurred on Jan. 26, 2014 and Feb. 3, 2014 respectively. The first event was located near Argostoli’s town, whereas the second one was located at the north part of Livadi village. These two strong earthquake events followed by smaller aftershocks provoking extensive crustal movements and structural damage effects. Differential Synthetic Aperture Radar Interferometry (DInSAR) is a powerful remote sensing tool for ground motion monitoring. The last two decades, DInSAR is widely applied to a variety of applications including natural hazards such as earthquakes. In 2007, a high resolution X-band satellite namely TerraSAR-X was launched. Due to its short revisit cycle of 11 days and its short wavelength, there is a good potential to capture faster surface movements. This study refers to the application of the DInSAR using TerraSAR-X strip map data to monitor the coand post-seismic surface deformation caused by the second earthquake event. Hence, based on the interferometric processing of multiple scenes, several differential interferograms calculated showing the deformation patterns which caused before and after the seismic event. First results show that the main part of the island shows stability or a small uplift whereas the western part shows a significant deformation pattern. Those results permit to identify the local tectonic setting of the study area and investigate the reasons that some of settlements affected more

Abstract Earthquakes occur at teh border of teh plates and faults, causing financial and casual damages. Teh study of earthquakes and surface deformation is useful in understanding teh mechanism of earthquakes and managing teh risks and crises of earthquakes. A fault can be specified by its geometric source parameters. In Okada’s definition, these parameters are length, width, depth, strike, di...

The psychosocial impact of two non-destructive earthquakes on pupils in Cephalonia island: a comparison with the Athens earthquake of September 1999

Background: Natural disasters may have a serious impact on child and adolescent mental health. High rates of post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSS), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and, to a lesser degree, associated psychopathology following natural disasters have been reported in many countries, including Greece. It has been suggested that whether or not youths will report PTSS/PTSD afte...

Integrated Sar Technologies for Monitoring the Stability of Mine Sites: Application Using Terrasar-x and Radarsat-2 Images

The last three decades have seen significant mining development in the northern regions of Canada, where the freeze and thaw cycle of permafrost and corresponding surface subsidence and heave represent a significant challenge at all mining stages, from the design of infrastructures to the monitoring of restored areas. Over the past ten years, SAR interferometry has been widely used to monitor g...

Deformation and Related Slip Due to the 2011 Van Earthquake (Turkey) Sequence Imaged by SAR Data and Numerical Modeling

A Mw 7.1 earthquake struck the Eastern Anatolia, near the city of Van (Turkey), on 23 October 2011. We investigated the coseismic surface displacements using the InSAR technique, exploiting adjacent ENVISAT tracks and COSMO-SkyMed images. Multi aperture interferometry was also applied, measuring ground displacements in the azimuth direction. We solved for the fault geometry and mechanism, and w...

Combining SAR tomography and a PSI approach for high- resolution 3-D imaging of an urban area

Combining persistent scatterer interferometry (PSI) and SAR tomography approaches has the potential to overcome layover scenarios in urban areas and may thus increase the level of detail of differential interferometric measurements of displacements in such environments. In this paper, we report the current status and results of our efforts to integrate SAR tomography into an operational interfe...
